A TRIAL ON THE COMPARISON OF “TRANSFORMATION” AND “GEÇMİŞ ZAMAN ELBİSELERİ”
Franz Kafka (1883-1924) is one of the eminent people in modern literature. The long story named Transformation (Die Verwandlung), which made him worldwide famous, was written in 1912 and was published in 1915 in German. The story which was first translated into Turkish by Vedat Günyol in 1952 was translated into French by AlexandreVialatte in 1938 with the name La Métamorphose. As it is a well known fact that the most common foreign language in our country used to be French during that time, it can be argued that the Turkish readers were well aware of thefamous work of Franz Kafka before 1952. The story by AhmetHamdiTanpınar (1901-1962) named Geçmiş Zaman Elbiseleri was published in Oluş journal in July, 1939. There are many similarities between the mentioned works of Franz Kafka and Ahmat Hamdi Tanpınar such as they both give central position to the metaphor of transformation, both have pratogonist relations with the outside world, the relations of main characters with the outside orld, the transformation they had experienced and their reactions to this transformationthe relations of secondary characters to the primary characters and their positive and negative effects to the content of transformation, the contribution of aspects of time and space to the centrality of the concept of transformation of the stories and lastly, the proximity of the time of publication of Geçmiş Zaman Elbiseleri and the translation of Transformation into French. The similarities spotted in the comparison of these two stories can be explained by some aspects such as the perception of these prominent writers, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar and Franz Kafka, on the nature of human, the events and the outside world; their similarities between their approach to value the existence of manhood and a natural interaction.
