THE CONSTITUNT ELEMENTS OF OMER SEYFETTİN’S STORIES: HISTORY AND LENGUAGE
‘Yeni Lisa’ movement (The New Language) which begun to evolve around the Genç Kalemler Journal (Young Pens) at 1911, was not just a movement targeting simplification in language, also was aiming to create a historical memory rests upon to nationalism. Especially Ömer Seyfettin, by placing his stories onto a historical base demanding to regenerate the cultural memory by the way of creating both a consciousness of language and a consciousness of nationalism based on historicity. Thus writer, both with the language pattern he used in his stories and with the historical dimension of the stories, took ‘national romantic sense manner’ in the hand within the framework of both “returning to national consciousness” and ‘cultural remembrance’. In the stories of Ömer Seyfettin historicity is constructed in terms of the protection of national identity and reconstruction of national conscious. Omer Seyfettin’s historical stories, who emphasizes the ‘not reinstatement of history but the revival of history’, has the character of ‘return to the spirit’. Writer, who reflects this ‘return to the spirit’ by the plot and heroes of his stories; establishes a strong connection among history, language and literature. In this article, the historicity and consciousness of language in the stories of Ömer Seyfettin will be analyzed within the framework of cultural memory.
