THE SOCIAL FUNCTION OF DYSTOPIA IN RAY BRADBURY’S STORY “THE PEDESTRIAN”
Recently, dystopia as a sub-genre of science fiction has gained popularity. As an outcome of the modern era, dystopia suggests an imaginary catastrophic society in future. Some well- known works such as 1984 by George Orwell, We by Yevgeny Zamyatin, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury can be given as examples written in this genre. The common feature of these novels is the narration of how a radical change occurs in the world order. As a famous science fiction writer, Ray Bradbury wrote several dystopian stories apart from Fahrenheit 451. “The Pedesterian” is one of examples of these dystopian stories. The aim of this paper is to analyse how the current social and political problems are reflected in “The Pedesterian” taking into consideration the social function of dystopias.
