STORY OF STRANGE WAY FROM GÜLCEMAL OR MYSTICAL JOURNEY OF A RESTLESS: al-qalandar
al-qalandar, Gulcemal’s second novel after Mylassiad, is about escaping from one’s own self: yet the main character of thetext, who believes in the necessity of running away from his life, is unable to determine why; where and how. The novel in the form of a travelogue offers a strange yet deliberate design in which the narrative voices of al-qalandar drift away on the routes of ancient mystics. While sliding and unfolding his many layered narrative, the main character of the narrative presents there a der with questions concerning the possibility of identity, belonging and salvation through attempted spiritial affiliations. Neither affirmed nor exactly rejected, the answers are postponed in mythical time, which proves to be the only outlet available.
