THE SYMBOLIC MEANINGS OF SNAKE AND FOLKLORİC ELEMENTS IN THE STORY OF “EVİN SAHİBİ”/[THE OWNER OF THE HOUSE]
Snake has symbolic meanings in the story of “Evin Sahibi” [The Owner of the House] by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, and the folkloric elements are functional in the plot of the story. It is seen that snake, Satan and genii symbolize fear and solicitude. As mentioned in “Kerkük Hatıraları” [Memoires of Kirkuk] by Tanpınar, he has built this story on the tales his grandmother told him and on delusive memoires of their housemaid called Gülbuy who was a hysteric woman. Previously, some important separate articles were written on this story and some original appraisals were made on it in several academic works. However, the symbolic meanings of snake and its folkloric sources were not examined in detail. In this article, the relationship between memoire, fiction and folklore was indicated, and the symbolic meanings and folkloric elements of the story were examined by employing some theoritical sources.
