TEVFİK FİKRET'S CRITIQUES ABOUT AZİYADE AND PIERRE LOTI
Tevfik Fikret has written two articles on Pierre Loti's Aziyade novel. These texts appeared in the columns of "Musâhabe-i Edebiyye” in Servet-i Fünûn magazine. The spaces of this novel are Thessaloniki and Istanbul. Tevfik Fikret states in these writings that Westerners do not recognize the Eastern societies and Pierre Loti does not know the customs of the Turks. Tevfik Fikret argues that since Loti does not have any information about the Turkish language, too many grammatical errors are seen in the novel. In addition, there are some moral problems in the adventures of Loti. According to Tevfik Fikret, Pierre Loti behaves immorally by talking about non-Muslim and Muslim women living in the Ottoman geography and Loti is lying. The fiction of the Aziyade novel is also questioned in terms of credibility and Tevfik Fikret thinks that Pierre Loti describes the events that cannot be realized as real. In this article, Tevfik Fikret's two texts will be evaluated along with Pierre Loti's life, temperament and works.
