THE INFLUENCES OF THOMES HOBBES' LEVIATHAN ON THE NOVEL ŞIPSEVDİ BY HÜSEYİN RAHMİ GÜRPINAR
In this article, the convergences and divergences between Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar 's (1864-1944) novel Şıpsevdi and Thomas Hobbes' (1588-1679) Leviathan are analyzed in terms of the worlds of thought, and it is argued that Gürpınar is openly or implicitly influenced by Hobbes, which is supported by textual comparison between the two works. The convergences between the two works are the belief that "Man is man's wolf" (a negative approach to human nature); the criticism of organized religion and opposition to superstitions; and adherence to scientific method and positivism. The divergences are that while Hobbes in Leviathan presents the absolutist state as a solution to the conflicting human nature and anarchy,G ürpınar in Şıpsevdi does not present a comprehensive and concrete political solution that could solve the negativities arising aut of human nature.
